Parks + Recreation, Ep. 15: "Sweetums"

UNDER CONSTRUCTION


Corporate culture. Fears of socialism. The evils of public libraries. This is the stuff of Eyewitness News “fear alerts”... and apparently Season 2 Parks + Rec. While Community has gained a reputation for edginess1, P + R has mostly defied the expectation that it would be a heavily satiric show. Sure many of the civil service workers shown are apathetic or borderline-anarchist, but that makes Parks more of a response to the TV idealism of The West Wing than it is to the real world. Tonight, however, our show took a standard from the West Wing playbook- focusing on a single political issue and unpacking it- and didn't really trouble themselves to be evenhanded about it.
“Sweetums”, Inc. is a (wonderfully) anachronistic Pawnee institution attempting to segue into our health-concerned age by sugar-coating2 the truth about its products. As part of that effort, they decide
